Courses and Programs at Athabasca University
Athabasca University's Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences offers two credentials addressing human resources and labour relations:
- University Certificate in Human Resources and Labour Relations: This one-year (30-credit) certificate can be taken as a stand-alone credential or used as a stepping stone for students interested in eventually completing the Bachelor of Human Resource and Labour Relations Degree.
- Bachelor of Human Resources and Labour Relations (BHRLR) Degree : This three-year (90 credits) degree addresses all aspects of human resource management, labour relations and human resource development. A post-diploma BHRLR is also available for those already holding an acceptable credential.
Both credentials offer transfer credit and prior learning assessment opportunities. For example, students who have completed a diploma from a recognized college or technical institute may be eligible to receive block credit of between 30 and 66 credit towards the BHRLR.
The BHRLR degree is recognized as meeting the degree requirements for the Canadian Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation. Students already holding the CHRP designation may also receive up to 6 credits towards their degree.
Graduates of both programs typically find employment as industrial relations officers and managers, human resource managers and trainers, human resource development professionals in government and industry as well as trade union officers and staff. These programs should also be of interest to those who simply want to better understand and participate in industrial relations and human resource matters in their own workplaces.
